Mike, Becky, Maggie & Liam and Ali have been on a cruise around Alaska for the past week!  Sounds like an amazing trip - seeing glaciers, whales, eagles and so much more!!  Mike sent a few pictures - thought I'd share!

Video of Mike flying with Blue Angels

Here is Mike's article for the Plain Dealer - and at the end is the video the Blue Angels provided to him of his flight!!!  I was bracing myself watching!!  It's pretty cool!!

Mike flies with the Blue Angels!!

So, Mike was chosen as the only media person to get to fly with the Blue Angels this year!  They are in town for the air show this weekend!  Kathy, Katy, Chris & I went down to watch - along with 4 of his colleagues from the PD!  It was pretty darn cool, to say the least!!!  Mike seemed surprisingly calm when we got there - pacing a bit, but otherwise doing alright!!  He was wisked away to get situated in the plane - Kathy & I chatted with his pilot CJ for a few minutes.  I made sure Mike was going to be safe up there!  He told us there was a pretty good chance he would pass out and/or throw up!!!

After 20 minutes or so, the engines started and they started taxiing down the runway!  And then they were off!!  They went by us and then straight up into the clouds!!!  I was watching and thinking - wow, I can't believe my brother is up there!  It was so cool!!  They were gone about 40 minutes and then they were back!  Safe landing...as they got close to us, Mike gave his thumbs up!!!  He did not pass out and he did not throw up!!!  Way to go Mike - so proud!!!

He was presented with a framed photo of the Blue Angels - we took some more pictures!  Then Mike somewhat talked...I say somewhat because he was pretty out of it!  A bit shaky...a bit nauseous!  But he held it together!  I believe he is glad he did it...would most likely not wish to do it again!  Check out the PD maybe Friday or Saturday for his article!!  But it was the experience of a lifetime!!!  And I am so glad I was able to be there for it!!!  Thanks Mike!!  Mom and dad would be proud!!!

Support Mike Darrah in the Alzheimer’s Breakthrough Ride from Cleveland to Pittsburgh!

From Mike Darrah...

As you may know my grandpa Darrah suffered and died from Alzheimer's. This was tough because he was not only a grandpa but a friend and roommate. For years I wanted to do something with the Alzheimer's Association in his memory, for some crazy reason this seemed like a good fit.

Having worked in non-profit for years, I never liked asking people for money even when I thought it was a worthwhile cause. I still don't like asking but I am going to here!! If you feel you are able please make a donation or at the very least sign the petition. If you know someone else who has felt the effects of Alzheimer's please forward this email so they can sign the petition.

Think of me peddling to Pittsburgh on Sept 13 & 14. There will be a small team of 3-4 of us peddling to take this petition to Washington DC. We will travel 75-85 miles a day by bike (should be fun!!). Thanks for your support!!

Today an estimated 5.3 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's. In addition, 78 million baby boomers are approaching the age of greatest risk for developing this fatal disease. Now is the time to end this epidemic!

This year, to support those affected by Alzheimer's, I'm participating in the Alzheimer's Breakthrough Ride, a journey from coast to capital to raise awareness and funds for the fight against Alzheimer's disease. I'll also be collecting signatures in support of the Alzheimer’s Breakthrough Act, legislation that calls for a significant increase in funding for Alzheimer research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), bringing total funding up to $2 billion.

The Alzheimer's Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research, and funds I raise will go directly toward supporting their efforts.

I know I can make a difference with your support! Will you consider making a donation? It's easy to give online by following the link below.

Thank you in advance for your time and generosity – together, we can help end Alzheimer's!

Follow This Link to visit my personal web page and help me in my efforts to support Alzheimer's Association.

Fun at The Flying Monkey~~Tremont Art Walk, July 9th, 2010

Beau, Tracy, Ali and Meg on the back patio at The Flying Monkey.

Friday night a bunch of us got together at the Flying Monkey in Tremont for the Tremont Art Walk.  I (Mary Ann) have a solo exhibit hanging at The Flying Monkey.  So what better reason to get together and have some fun?

I thought Jim looked somewhat like Grandpa Scott in these shades.  By Grandpa Scott I mean Harold Scott.

You can never have enough sunglasses. (The sunglasses were freebies.  Promotional giveaways for a pale ale.)

Me with some of the art.  The show is up for the rest of July and through August 10th.  I'm hoping to make it down to the Taste of Tremont this Sunday (the 18th).  Good food, Good art!

Happy 4th!

Hello!!!  It's July 2nd already...I don't want to rush the summer along, but it seems to be flying by!  Went to the Indians game tonight with the Sedivy's and Brant!  Fireworks after were fantastic...Indians lost...Ali introduced us to Slider!

I've been back from Turkey for a few weeks now...what an amazing trip we had!!  Thank you John & Rose for being such wonderful tour guides and showing us so much!  Turkey is beautiful and the people are so friendly!  And the food was excellent!  Two weeks wasn't quite enough...I'd love to go back!  It's hard to pick pictures out of the 1800 that I took!  But here are just a few!

Istanbul - top picture. Taken from the rooftop terrace at the Hanedan Hotel, with Hagia Sophia in the background.
Selcuk - bottom picture.  Taken from the rooftop terrace at the Homeros Pension...with the Artemis Temple in the background - one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World!!  You can barely see it back there, but it's there!  The rooftop terraces were wonderful - one of my favorite things about Turkey!  In Istanbul we had happy hour every day on our terrace overlooking the Bosphorous!!

Bodrum - top picture. Our hotel is the tallest building - the Otel Gulet! Bodrum looked very Greek to me - very, very close to the Greek Islands!!
Cappadocia -bottom picture. These are some of the amazing Fairy Chimneys!!

The Library at Ephesus...it was incredible here!!

I got home from Turkey on Thursday, June 10 (Mom & Dad's anniversary!) and went to Chautauqua on Saturday for a night.  Then last weekend to New York City for the weekend with Bill.  We went to visit Carola from Germany - she is living in the Bronx for a year, maybe two and her parents were visiting from Germany!  So, now I am staying home - no traveling for awhile!!!  Except to Vermilion for the 4th!!

Lakewood is becoming the place to be!!!  We have 3 new residents!  Justin moved to an apartment on Clifton near Gladys and Beau & Tracy moved to the downstairs of a house on Westlake!  And Ali moved to a new house on Lakeland!  Who's next???!!!

That's it for now...I am considering going back to the actual newsletters!  Seems that may be the way to go...I'm not sure if the blog is working!!  Let me know!

Just a few thoughts...

Hello!
It is a gorgeous May evening...and I am taking a break from packing for Turkey!  Hard to believe I leave with Peg & Dave and Charley & Dee Dee on Thursday to visit John & Rose!  It's been a busy week and it's only Monday!!  Last night of course was the Lost finale...would have loved it soooo much more if ABC would not have had technical difficulties!  What a night for that to happen!  There is much to say on the series finale and I'm sure next time we're all together, we will discuss and discuss and discuss!!!  A few word summary:  life, death, love, redemption!

Tomorrow we honor mom one year later...it's going to be a mixed feeling kind of day.  melancholy, sad, happy to be thinking of her too.  I'll miss the anniversary of dad's death on June 9 - but am grateful that I'll be with Peg, Dave & John.  We'll actually be leaving John that day to go back to Istanbul to fly home the next day.

I wanted to post now and update the birthdays, anniversaries...since I'll be gone til June 10!  Til then...adios!

May Update!!

Well...it is Monday, May 10 - Happy Birthday Brad!!!  I have been saying over the last week to different individuals "Oh, that would be a good post for the blog!"  And then I forget to post.  So, I will attempt to share some of the news that has been happening!

Clare - Congratulations to Clare on her new job!!!!  Today was her first day at Westlake Montessori!  She will be working with the babies, toddlers, pre-schoolers...she'll start off as a floater (is this correct Clare?), then will help run their summer camp program (welcome to the world of camp!)!!  Very exciting!

Justin - Sticking with the theme of moving to Lakewood, Justin will be moving to Lakewood on June 1!!  He's moving to an apartment on Clifton at Gladys...close to Lakewood Park!  Welcome to Lakewood Justin!!!

Ali - Also moving on June 1!!  Ali is moving to the downstairs of a double on Lakeland!  It just happens to be the same address as her old place on Bonnieview - 1278!  Play the lottery Ali!!

Happy (belated) Mother's Day to all mothers!  I met Kathy, Peg & Jim at the cemetery yesterday...we put the vase in so if you visit the cemetery you can now bring flowers!  It was so beautiful to see how many people go to the cemetery on Mother's Day!  And it was a bit sad and melancholy too...

And last but not least - I thought I'd share a photo.  I was at Mary Ann & Bob's Saturday night...and Ali took this pic of us!

If you have accepted the invite to be a contributor, feel free to post news, pictures, etc...Have a great week!!!

Successful Jewelry Making!

We gathered at Peg's for a simple afternoon/evening of jewelry making...with our wonderful teacher Mary Ann!  A simple afternoon/evening turned into 6 hours of strenuous work!!  Wow - it is difficult to make a necklace!!!  But I think everyone who came to learn how to bead ended up with some really nice pieces of jewelry - earrings, bracelets, necklaces, wine charms!!  And Dave even joined in and got the drill going so we could incorporate some beach glass into the pieces!  Thank you Mary Ann, Peg & Dave!!!
Modeling our works of art!!!

Still working out the kinks!!!

Hello Family!
I am still trying to work the kinks out for this blog!!  But I'm hoping it will work!  I think I will send each of you an invite to be able to write your own postings...then maybe once a month I will send a reminder to check the blog and summarize what has been posted...that is if we start to use it!
Use it for everything I used the newsletter for...new jobs, someone moving, post pictures, or just to ramble!!  For example...this picture is one I took recently at Lakeview Cemetery!  Kathy & I went there 2 Sundays ago and spent a little over 3 hours just taking pictures...it was a beautiful day and I think both of us were able to get some really good shots!  It's such a great place to take pictures!
That's it for now...I'll send out an invite so that you can all be "authors" on our family blog!!!

Arizona!

Took this picture in honor of Dad.  Lots of Cats being used on road construction!

I went to Tucson last week to visit Muggsi, who moved there about a year and a half ago.  We spent lots of time hiking, birdwatching (23 life birds!), looking at wildflowers; the desert was in complete bloom from all the rains they had recently.
We went to mass on Mom's birthday at the Mission of San Xavier.  This church was built in the 1600's by the Jesuits.  It is situated on an Indian Reservation about a half hour south of Tucson.  The mass was wonderful, it was so good to be in the beautiful church and think of Mom on her birthday.

Happy Birthday Mom!

Happy Birthday Mom!!! As you know last Thursday, April 8, was mom's birthday. There was a memorial Mass on Friday at St. Augustine's. It was beautiful mass. Fr. Joe talked about mom in the homily...it was wonderful to have Fr. Joe say the Mass because he knew mom and was able to make this mass more personal for us!
